Here are some pictures taken at the Big Bear Bronco Bash. This weekend of wheelin was organized by Steffie and Dusty Sharp, and took place on June 20-22, 2003. Dusty is the founder of SoCalBroncos, The Early Bronco Brotherhood of Southern California, and Steffie is his lovely wife. Nancy, Rhonda, and Sonja went with me to the Golden Bear Cabins, where we stayed in the "Igloo". A large contingent of the Brotherhood stayed in adjacent cabins, and we went out on various trails in the San Bernardino National Forest. A great time was had by everyone that I talked to or heard from, and though I have only a few pictures from the two runs we went on, I will try to drop in some links to where you can find additional pictures from some of the other runs. Here we are at the top of White Mountain. Getting here was interesting. I had a bit of trouble in the middle of one of the steepest hills. When we got me to the top of it, Norm crawled under my truck and rerouted my fuel line. I had no more major difficulties the rest of the weekend, but it was a little interesting when I was unable to restart the Bronco in the middle of the steep hill, and Eric was not able to get enough traction to pull me up. After enough time elapsed, my lines cooled enough to let the fuel pass again, and we continued to the top of the hill.
This is Norm at the bottom of Suicide Hill. His truck performed flawlessly all weekend.
Here are Sonja and Rhonda on top of White Mountain with the camera pointed west. Notice the clouds that are below the top of the mountain. We were up in the sunshine all weekend, while it was cloudy and rainy down in the valley. Here is Steve Urban, our trail leader, pointing out where we are headed. His truck is on the left, mine is on the right. Here is a picture of Sonja, Dan, and Rhonda. The girls rode with Dan both days, as I hadn't put the back seat in my Bronco. The fact that Dan was by himself gave room for Sonja and Rhonda to ride, which in turn gave Dan someone to talk to along the way. Good for all of us. Sonja and I were raiding the cooler. - We obviously got caught. Here's Rhonda and Bill, taking in the views on one of the stops on Sunday. We went on the Gold Mine Road, with only 4 Broncos. It was quite a bit easier that the other runs that were planned for the day, and the four of us(Bill, Gines, Dan, & me) didn't want to work as hard as the other guys were going to have to work. Next is Nancy and Yolonda checking out the cactus. There was an abundance of wild flowers everywhere. It's always a pleasure to spend time in God's garden. Views from the gold mine. Notice Rhonda and Sonja on the timbers. They have the kind of energy, and lack of fear that I had when I was that age. This thing about getting old is the pits. Nancy has been a little reluctant to go out wheelin with me in the past, mostly because of irrational fear. She is overcoming that now. She has now been out twice, once one the shakedown run with Dave Keck, and now the BBBB03. As you can see, she had a good time. Bill took this picture of the rest of the group, along the way on Sunday. Here is the last shot I took up there. I climbed up on a rock to shoot all 4 of the Broncos. We all had a great time, and are looking forward to the next trip. For more information about this run, or about SoCalBroncos, follow one of the following links.
